Matt Choi’s journey in the financial markets began long before his 25+ years of professional trading experience. Growing up in Hong Kong, Matt was introduced to investing at the tender age of 11 by his maternal grandfather, a successful stock broker and investor. During his elementary school years, Matt would accompany his grandfather to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange each afternoon after school. While he couldn’t enter the exchange floor itself, those daily bus rides became informal masterclasses in investment principles. His grandfather, who had built a multimillion-dollar fortune by the early 1980s during challenging economic times, instilled in young Matt the foundational understanding of markets that would shape his entire career.

This early exposure to financial markets naturally led Matt to begin his trading career during the late 1990s dot-com boom era. Like many traders of that generation, he initially focused on buying and selling stocks before quickly evolving into options and futures trading. While he successfully rode the dot-com wave upward, the 2001 market crash taught him invaluable lessons about risk management and discipline – lessons that would fundamentally reshape his approach to trading.

This pivotal moment led Matt to his late mentor, George Fontanills, whose guidance over several years transformed him from an impulsive young trader into a disciplined, prolific options and futures trader who truly understands risk management. Through George’s mentorship and immersing himself in the school of hard knocks, Matt developed his signature approach of focusing on consistently profitable strategies rather than chasing home runs. In 2011, Matt earned his Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation from the CMT Association, cementing his expertise in technical analysis and his passion for identifying repetitive patterns that generate predictable returns over time.

Recognizing the tremendous demand for quality trading education, Matt founded Certus Trading Inc. in 2015 with a mission to help traders avoid the costly mistakes he made early in his career. Having built substantial wealth through his own trading success, Matt focuses on teaching actual, actionable strategies that prioritize steady gains and consistent winning over spectacular but unpredictable outcomes. Over the past decade, he has educated more than 80,000 traders through various settings including one-on-one coaching, small group masterminds, and larger online and in-person programs. Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences from Queen’s University, along with an MBA from McMaster University in Canada. A former soccer player (until his knees said otherwise), Matt is now a dedicated hockey dad who spends considerable time at the rink. He’s also a Taekwondo black belt, co-author of the Amazon bestselling book “The Winning Way” with Brian Tracy, and an avid traveler and foodie who enjoys exploring the world with his wife and child.
